Skin tags are made up of two different types of structures. One is a miniature SK, the other is a tiny outpouching of actual skin, called an acrochordon. String moles are a genetic condition and are more common in those who are overweight.
These lesions are non contagious and nonmalignant, but they surely are one of the most annoying nuisances of the human skin. They constantly catch on dresses, sweaters, clothing, and necklaces.
They’re also a favorite target for babies, who’ll grab anything in sight and try to twist them off.
Other favorite places for skin tags to develop are in the armpits and the groin, where they tend to be somewhat bigger. These lesions definitely tend to be more numerous in people who are overweight. It seems, sometimes, that one needs not only the genes
for them but the size as well.
Some time ago, researchers reported that skin tags were more likely to occur in diabetics, but the studies necessary to confirm this were apparently never done. It’s very possible that, since they occur more often in the overweight individual, obesity is the reason we see more diabetes, too. In other words obesity may be the cause of both conditions. Recently, a study related them to polyps in the colon as well. So people with bowel symptoms and extremely numerous skin tags should be examined for these large-bowel outgrowths too.
The best treatment is very gentle, delicate electrocution of the string mole with an electric needle. The current must be extremely low in order not to scar the skin underlying the skin tag.
Some patients report that they have tag like lesions on their eyelids. In these cases, a dermatologist should at least evaluate the lesion before anything is done, to make absolutely sure it’s just a skin tag. There are virtually hundreds of lumps and bumps that can occur around the eyelids, and proper diagnosis is crucial. However, skin tags or papillomas, as the eye surgeons (ophthalmologists) call them. are the most common by far.
Many patients ask if they are viral bumps, or if rubbing them makes them worse. Do they go away after menopause? This shows the depth of the misinformation on common problems like skin tags. No, these are not true!
